Illustration Collage in the style of author Eric Carle
Ages 8-12
Collage is the art of creating a picture by gluing an assortment of odd pieces of materials to a support. Eric Carle has used this technique to create artistic illustrations in his books which include The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Hermit Crab Finds a Home, Pancakes, Pancakes, The Grouchy Ladybug and more. In this class, students will paint paper with a variety of techniques to create interesting and unusual materials to work with. They will be taught how to create and work with a paper pattern. Then each student will use the unique paper to make cut paper representational collage pictures. They will choose one piece to frame.

Papier Mache
Ages 8-12
In this class students will learn a new way of using papier mache to create sculptures. Each participant will create an armature with wire and newspaper. Human, animal, or monster figures can be created and posed then covered with papier mache. Students will use an assortment of colored paper for the final layer. In the last session, details will be added with a wide range of craft materials. During the class we will discuss ways to keep the mess to a minimum and speed drying time for "last minute" school projects. They will be taught to use tools and hot glue safely.

Small Gifts, Ornaments and Pop-up Cards
ages 8-12
Students will create a number of small gifts and ornaments to prepare for the holiday season. They will use a wide range of materials; students will cut, glue, draw, paint, sculpt, bake and sew their gifts. They will wrap their presents for their family and friends then make a few pop-up cards to go along with the gifts.

Art Materials and Techniques for Classroom Teachers
(10 PDPs)
Designed for the elementary and middle school classroom teacher, this hands-on course will explore a variety of art techniques and materials. Each week, the focus will be on one type of art material. These will include types of paints and projects, sculpting materials, printmaking and miniature books.Teachers should plan to participate in a discussion of ways to use art in the classroom to enhance the curriculum.
